Father Ange Le Proust, an Augustinian friar, experienced the misery of the poor during his lifetime. He prayed before the Blessed Sacrament. It is there, before Jesus and the Blessed Sacrament, that he received the grace of the interior light which is at the origin of our Congregation. He brought together in mutual charity, a group of young ladies, willing to "Serve Jesus and the Poor." This all started in Lamballe, Brittany France; in the year of grace, our Lord Jesus 1661. Father Ange gave this new group the name of Sisters of Saint Thomas of Villanova. The Bishop of Valencia, Spain was canonized in 1558 during the lifetime of Father Ange. St. Thomas of Villanova was also known as the "Father of the Poor" as an Augustinian Friar.
